Introduction: Building a Simple DIY Cat Shelter
If you have outdoor cats, strays, or ferals in your area, providing them with a safe and warm shelter is a kind and helpful act. This guide will walk you through building a simple, affordable cat shelter using a Rubbermaid container and readily available materials. This project is relatively easy and can significantly improve the lives of cats facing harsh weather.
Materials You'll Need:
  • One 166+ Rubbermaid storage container with a lid (the larger the better for insulation)
  • Insulation material: Straw (NOT hay), rigid foam board, or Reflectix insulation
  • Box cutter or utility knife
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Drill with a drill bit large enough for cats to pass through
  • Optional: Duct tape or waterproof sealant
  • Optional: Some heavy objects for the top so it doesn't blow away
  • Step 1: Preparing the Container
First, thoroughly clean the Rubbermaid container and lid. This will remove any odors that might deter cats from using the shelter. Ensure it's completely dry before proceeding.
    Step 2: Cutting the Entrance
Decide where you want the entrance to be. A good rule of thumb is to position it on one of the shorter sides, slightly elevated from the bottom (a few inches) to help prevent rain and snow from entering. Use your measuring tape and marker to draw a circle or square entrance. A 6-7 inch diameter circle is generally a good size. Using the drill, carefully drill a pilot hole on the inside of the mark you drew. Using the box cutter/utility knife, carefully cut out the entrance hole. Be sure to wear gloves and eye protection while cutting. Sand down the edges, if possible, to make sure there are no sharp bits for the cats to cut themselves on.
    Step 3: Insulating the Shelter
This is the most important step for providing warmth. Choose your insulation material. Straw is excellent because it allows cats to burrow and breathe within it, and still be insulated and warm. DO NOT use hay as it rots and harbors mold and bacteria. Rigid foam boards need to be measured and cut to fit the inner sides, bottom, and lid of the container. Use the box cutter or utility knife to cut the insulation to the correct sizes. Reflectix can be layered to increase insulation, if you use that. Secure the insulation to the inside of the container using duct tape or waterproof sealant if needed. Leave the entrance clear of insulation.
Step 4: Adding Bedding (Optional, But Recommended)
While the straw provides insulation, you can add a layer of soft bedding on top of the straw for extra comfort. Consider using old towels or fleece blankets. Avoid using materials that can easily absorb moisture, such as cotton, as this can make the shelter damp and cold. Replace bedding regularly to keep it clean and dry.
    Step 5: Assembling the Shelter
Carefully place the insulated lid onto the Rubbermaid container, ensuring it's securely fastened. For added security against the weather, you can use duct tape around the edges of the lid to create a tighter seal. Consider adding waterproof sealant instead of duct tape so you can easily remove the lid for cleaning and maintenance.
    Step 6: Placing the Shelter
Choose a sheltered location for the cat house, away from direct wind and heavy rain. A covered porch, under a bush, or against a building are good options. Elevate the shelter slightly off the ground using bricks or wooden blocks to prevent moisture from seeping in. Consider placing heavy objects, like rocks or bricks, on top of the lid to prevent the shelter from being blown away by strong winds.
    Conclusion: Providing Warmth and Safety
By following these steps, you've created a simple, yet effective cat shelter that can provide warmth and safety to outdoor cats. Remember to check the shelter regularly, clean it as needed, and replenish the bedding to ensure it remains a comfortable and inviting haven for your feline friends. Your efforts can make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable animals during harsh weather.
